English Department
At Elite School Sharjah, our English curriculum from KG1 to Grade 12 is rooted in the American educational framework and aligned with the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (CCSS ELA). Through a coherent, progressive and academically challenging program, we empower students to become confident communicators, proficient readers, accomplished writers and independent thinkers, equipped with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to thrive in an ever-changing world.
Our curriculum develops the four essential language domains (reading, writing, speaking and listening) through a carefully sequenced progression from foundational phonics, vocabulary and early literacy to advanced comprehension, literary analysis, academic writing, research and evidence-based argumentation. Guided by Bloom's Taxonomy, with a strong emphasis on higher-order thinking, students are encouraged to analyze, evaluate, create, question and apply their learning to meaningful, real-world contexts.
Student well-being is central to our educational philosophy. We nurture a safe, inclusive and stimulating learning environment where every student feels valued, respected and motivated to succeed. Through differentiated instruction, targeted support and enrichment for students with diverse learning needs, including Students of Determination, English Language Learners (EAL) and Gifted and Talented learners, we promote confidence, resilience, collaboration, creativity and a lifelong love of learning.
Our approach to teaching and learning is informed by continuous assessment and evidence-based decision-making. MAP Growth and CAT4 assessments help us understand students' learning profiles, identify strengths and areas for development, monitor progress and inform targeted teaching. We also develop students' readiness for international assessments and benchmarks, including PISA, PIRLS and TIMSS, while supporting advanced academic pathways through AP, PSAT, SAT and IELTS preparation.
Beyond academic achievement, we encourage students to become globally aware, socially responsible and culturally grounded individuals. Through meaningful integration of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), interdisciplinary projects, inquiry-based learning and purposeful technology integration, students explore global challenges, develop environmental and social awareness, and recognize their responsibility in shaping a sustainable future. UAE heritage, Emirati culture and national identity remain integral to our learning experiences.
We further enrich the English learning experience through literary, intellectual and leadership opportunities, including participation in Emirates Literature Foundation competitions, the Annual English Literacy Festival, debates, Model United Nations, public speaking and other activities that celebrate creativity, communication and student voice.
